ESI: Employees’ State Insurance

 

ESI stands for Workers’State Insurance. It’s a health insurance scheme for Indian workers to give medical and cash benefits to them. It’s managed by Workers State Insurance Corporation (ESIC). ESIC is an independent pot under Ministry of Labor and Employment, Government of India. It provides services and manages their guests through the large network of their services in India. It’s headquartered in New Delhi and as of July 2017, Sh. Raj Kumar is the Director General of ESIC.

 

History

Before the actuality of ESI in Feb, 1952, an economist and latterly Governor of Reserve Bank of IndiaB.N. Adarkar, was appointed by the Government of India to produce a health insurance scheme for artificial workers. His submitted report was the base of Employment State Insurance Act of 1948 but this came in reality in 1952 and first established in Delhi and Kanpur.

 

Ideal of ESI Act, 1948

To give benefit for sickness and medical treatment including motherliness and disablement to the workers of manufactories and establishments and their dependents.

 

Six types of benefits are handed under ESIC act which are as follows

Sickness benefit

Motherliness benefit

Disablement benefit

Dependents’ benefit

Medical benefit

Burial charges

These insurance schemes include sickness, motherliness, disablement, and death due to employment injury and give medical care to the assured workers and their families.
